Clunk when engaging gear on a boat
Some engagement noise is the nature of a dog clutch. A clunk that's getting louder, or a shudder that shakes the boat, is the driveline complaining about shock it wasn't built to absorb.

Before you spend money
Idle-speed engagement technique matters too: engage at the lowest stable idle, not with revs on. If the clunk survives good technique and healthy mounts, then look at the driveline hardware.
