From the Stour Valley Ironworks

The company began in 1868 as Mainprice Barton's Stour Valley Ironworks — agricultural machinery, boilers and general engineering for the local mills and breweries. The propellers arrived in 1908, when an apprentice named Philip Ransome, fascinated by the new motor boats, carved wooden patterns for two- and three-blade propellers; Barton spotted the opportunity and the first Bruntons propellers were cast that same year. When Harold Brunton acquired the business on Barton's retirement in 1911, the company took his name and became a specialist propeller maker — a reputation the First World War forged into a major marine business.

In 1958 Bruntons joined forces with Stone Manganese Marine, the firm that props the world's largest ships — gaining metallurgy few propeller makers will ever have (the in-house alloys Nikalium and Superston flow from that lineage). The Sudbury foundry's largest casting — a three-metre four-blade designed for quiet running on a fisheries research vessel — left the mould in 1986. In 1988 came the Autoprop, developed with the University of Southampton: the world's first and only fully self-pitching propeller, honoured with the Queen's Award in 1999 after Sir Chay Blyth fitted it across the entire BT Global Challenge fleet.

Today Bruntons builds from Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, as part of the Stone Marine Group within Langham Industries — a privately owned British family business. Sister company Stone Marine Propulsion designs above Bruntons' 3-metre ceiling, up to the largest commercial vessels; group partner Tridan Engineering handles the Autoprop's precision machining, assembly and submerged testing. And Bruntons remains the only company that designs and manufactures every type of propeller: fixed, folding, feathering, self-pitching, electric and fully custom, for leisure, commercial and naval vessels. That breadth is the honesty advantage — a company that builds every architecture can tell you which one your boat needs, and which it doesn't.

Supply, installation, servicing and spares for the full range — Autoprop, Varifold, Eco*Star, SigmaDrive, Autolock and IonGuard — are handled here, and the evidence library grows with every Australian fitting.
