Australia spans forty degrees of latitude, and your propeller knows it. The same Autoprop that stays clean through a Hobart winter can foul into a lump of reef in a Cairns marina by Christmas. This guide is grounded in what the Queenscliff workshop actually sees come out of the water.
The gradient, honestly
- Tropical Queensland (Gladstone north): growth begins in weeks. Warm water, high nutrients, year-round season. Marina-berthed boats need running-gear attention every 6–10 weeks in summer.
- Subtropical (SE QLD, northern NSW): fast summers, kinder winters. A quarterly wipe keeps a low-drag prop honest.
- Temperate (Sydney to SA): the classic season — spring bloom, summer growth, winter pause. Twice-a-season attention usually suffices.
- Victoria & Tasmania: the slowest growth in the country, but cold-water tubeworm is stubborn once established. Port Phillip boats do well with a seasonal clean.
Why low-drag props feel fouling first
A fixed blade with barnacles is slower; a feathering or folding blade with barnacles is broken. Growth on an Autoprop's blade changes its balance and it pitches wrong. Growth in a Varifold's hinge and the blades open late or unevenly. The precision you paid for is exactly what fouling attacks — which is why the cleaning interval matters more after the upgrade, not less.
What actually works
- Use the boat. Nothing keeps a propeller clean like turning it — a fortnightly motor beats any coating.
- Proper propeller coatings (silicone-based foul-release types) genuinely help on running gear; standard hull antifoul mostly doesn't survive on blades.
- Dive and wipe between hauls: a glove and two minutes per blade. Check the anode while you're down.
- At every lift: clean, inspect, grease (roller-bearing models), anode. Fifteen minutes that protects the whole investment.
If you're moving the boat north — the classic east-coast migration — tell us. The propeller spec doesn't change, but the maintenance calendar does, and we'd rather set that expectation before Airlie Beach does.
